Summer Chess by the Beach | Armação de Pêra
Last summer, I had the chance to join a truly unique chess festival right here by the beach in Armação de Pêra. Unlike any traditional tournament, this one took place outdoors — with the warm Algarve air, ocean breeze, and waves in the background.
Because of the summer heat, the matches started after sunset. Playing (or watching) chess under the stars with the sound of the sea was an unforgettable experience.
The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. Locals, tourists, kids, and even casual players gathered around the boards. It was less about competition, and more about sharing the love of the game in a setting full of good vibes.
Whether you're a chess fan or not, it's the kind of event that makes you fall in love with the town — and maybe even with the game itself.

Delightfull place for our week's holiday. Great beaches with and without cliffs. Pedro's Bar on the beach has excellent snacks, light meals and drinks delivered super fast. And there is a Lidl for self caterers!

Beautiful walking esplanade with high vantage point along the beach. Nice opportunity to see sunrise and sunset on a clear day. Many nice apartments across the esplanade with balconies, suitable for holiday rental. A few restaurants along the way. Easy to find parking in March.
