Castelo de Abrantes

Great place to visit with excellent views of the surrounding countryside. The castle was closed when I visited but the beautifully landscaped gardens around the castle are well worth a walk for the panoramic views alone

Castelo de Abrantes is a stunning place to explore, especially in the quiet of the morning. Perched on a hilltop, it offers sweeping views of the city and surrounding landscape—perfect for a peaceful walk and some truly memorable photos. What impressed me most was how thoughtfully the historical information has been curated. The signage and displays make it easy to appreciate the castle’s early significance as a strategic military site and its evolving role throughout Portuguese history. Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking for a scenic escape, this castle is absolutely worth the visit.

Unlike most castles in Portugal that provide little to no information about them, the city of Abrantes takes great pride in its place in Portuguese history. Inside the church, converted into a museum (all churches should be converted into places of learning), you will find a 12 min. video on the history of the castle. Free parking on site. There is no entry fee, but the museum is 2€.

This resembles more of a fortress than a castle but either way it has spectacular views. The history behind this location is very interesting, so take the time out to read the plaques.
