The 1st mention of the castle dates back to the 13th century. The old castle, high in the mountains, was abandoned, so the new one was reinforced (it explains the name of the village) in the 14th century.

Great place, stayed there first time we came to find a property in the area,, the lizard restaurant is also incredible

Wonderful castle in an historic and typical portuguese village. The walk uphill is amazing, I would recommend to leave the car near the first bridge at the entrance and then walk and explore

It’s a short uphill walk from the restaurant, o Lagarto, where we had lunch. The store by the ruin was closed but we were able to go up the tower anyway. Some beautiful “mountain views” from this site on a clear sunny day.

We saw some donkeys in a field and walked down to play with them for a bit.

The town is small but every corner is picturesque. When I visited on a Sunday there was literary no one else, neither tourist nor inhabitant
