Hidden at the foot of the Serra da Lousã, the Castelo da Lousã is a small but majestic medieval fortress built in the 11th century. Unlike the massive hilltop castles of central Portugal, this one sits low in a lush valley, guarding the entrance to the mountain pass. Built from local schist (the same dark stone used in the famous Aldeias do Xisto), the castle blends perfectly with the rugged landscape.

Beautiful spot for a little hike and culture. Castelo da Lousã is one of the old castles of the Mondego defensive line. Today only the castle keep is standing, from the castle walls you have an amazing view into the valley of river Arouce and the little chapel and grounds of the Sántuario da Senhora da Piedade.
You can drive up to the castle and park in front of it. Its not accessible for people who need a wheelchair or are not steady on their legs. The stairways are steep. Entry is free.

This is a small very small castle, but very picturesque. The view from the top is lovely, if you are lucky enough to visit on a day it's open. Best to visit on a weekend if you would like to climb the tower. It's located on a nice hiking trail that is challenging, but you can follow it right up to Talasnal and Casal Novo. There is also a pretty river beach, a waterfall, and highly rated restaurant very close by.

Unfortunately the road to the castle is closed for repairs but it is quite an easy walk about 40 minutes uphill. Also the swimming area is also currently closed as is the cafe.

Cool tiny castle in the middle of stunning nature in Lousa. Not overly much to see, but the setting is stunning with the sound of water from down below in the gorge. There is a nice resting platform behind the castle. We loved the little settlement at the bottom, and the views all round are amazing.
