The walk up to the castle is fabulous and the castle itself offers great views from the top of the mountain.

The Castle of Monsanto was partially destroyed in 1815 when its gunpowder store accidentally exploded, leaving the fortress in ruins. Free entance. Breathtaking views

We got to go up here alone. It was sunny and cold and magical. The view was tremendous and filled me with awe.

Super glad to have driven here! The stones and the little town on the top of the hill was so cool! Way more cool than the photos made it seem. We did find parking very easily a bit down the hill - parking was free in October.
To be clear, it is on the top of a hill, so you are walking a somewhat steep hill on cobblestones.
It was not too busy in any area of the village or top castle.

Sunset and sunrise are the best moments of the day. Not too far from town. I still think it could be done better (like all the signs with information written about items are hard to read)
