The barrier island, one of about 4, stretching from Cacela Velha in the east to Faro in the west, has outstanding beaches, largely unspoiled. It extends from the mouth of Rio Gilao for a number of kilometers to the west. There are only two serviced beach areas, one at the east end, and the other at Barril. There is also an informal naturist beach, 1.5 km west of Barril. Pure white sand, and largely unoccupied. That being said, ensure that you do your swimming in a supervised area, for safety's sake. Access options are by ferry from the west side of the Gilao in Central Tavira, or by train or footpath to Barril from the extreme west end of Santa Luzia.
