We just spent two weeks in Portugal and ended our stay in the Algarve with a hike at Benagil and lunch at Restaurante Istabom.

This was absolutely the best meal we had in Portugal (and that's saying a lot). The place was very comfortable, a bit rustic, with both indoor and outdoor seating.

The owner, Bruno, spent quite a bit of time with us as it is low season and we showed up near closing time for the afternoon break, so we were one of two couples in the place.

He explained to us about the different types of fish and seafood he offered, and we spent a lovely hour and a half.

We started with an appetizer of clams and razor clams which was absolutely delicious. He showed us the live clams before cooking them. The juices from the clams were orgasmic. We mopped those up with really good bread and I actually drank the last couple of tablespoons worth when we ran out of bread. The juice was garlic, olive oil, spices, and the juices from the clams cooking.

Then, we had a very fresh grilled flounder. Spectacular.

Finally, dessert and coffee.

Overall, this was really one of our favorite experiences in Portugal. Bruno's English is quite good, he is very helpful and knowledgeable, and just a nice guy who makes great food.

Absolutely recommended.

As I was walking up to the door of the restaurant a woman came out to greet me. What a pleasant way to arrive. We enjoyed the food, the wine was nice and the service was fabulous and friendly.

During our holiday in the Algarve we visited this restaurant twice ,a true hidden gem. At first it almost feels like you’ve arrived on someone’s driveway, but behind it you’ll find a charming and authentic place with a wonderful atmosphere.

We were warmly welcomed by the owner, who took the time to explain the fresh fish of the day, grilled to perfection over charcoal. Enjoying cheese, olives and tuna pâté on the sunny terrace, in such a peaceful setting, made us feel immediately at home.

The food was outstanding: beautifully cooked cod on our first visit and the fish of the day, corvina, on our second. Highly recommended!

Bon Dia Canucks and travellers.. this really a place to enjoy a traditional Portuguese meal. Honestly this was just a WOW and we really recommend this restaurant. Been on this area for approx a month and here we hit the jackpot.. Wine selection is excellent and the owners recommendation perfectly matched our meal. I had the sea bass and to be honest.. it was the best I ever tasted.
Travellers this is a sure shot stop. Enjoy 😎🍷

A fantastic local gem for anyone craving expertly grilled fish fresh from the market 🙌🏼

Their selection is among the best in town, with each fish prepared to highlight its natural flavor without overpowering seasoning. I had the golden sea bream in several restaurants in Portugal, but this was by far the best 🙌🏼

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it a great stop whether you’re coming from the beach or exploring the nearby cliffs of Benagil. Quiet and peaceful dinning.

It’s a popular spot, especially in peak season, so arriving early or making a reservation is a good idea if you want to avoid long waits.

The menu leans heavily toward traditional Portuguese fare, so it’s perfect for those looking to experience local flavors. Ask the staff what fish was brought in that daymany regulars do, and it’s the best way to ensure you’re getting the freshest catch. The owner is very professional and informed when it comes to wine and pairings, so don’t be afraid to ask 🥂

Parking in the area is abundant but limited, so plan ahead, especially if you’re visiting during lunch or dinner hours. We didn’t have a problem but our friends the week before wished they arrived earlier to park.

Overall, Istabom is a must-try for seafood lovers and a solid choice for an authentic meal in the Lagoa region, and possibly the best grilled fish in town 🐟✨

Great restaurant for charcoal grilled, fresh fish. Friendly and knowledgeable owner who will guide you around the fresh fish counter. Not our first time visiting and certainly won’t be our last!

The best grilled fish and squid we've ever eaten. Everything had tons of flavor. Try the barnacles! Great service, too.
