Beautiful cove with a small harbour. Murals and statues bear references to it's fishing heritage and the monk seal from which the village derives it's name. Numerous bars and gift shops. Some cosy churches that are ornately decorated inside. There is a statue of a seated Winston Churchill painting the picturesque landscape when he visited Madeira and, in particular, this spot in 1950. Well worth a visit.

Charming fishing village with lovely shops, great restaurants, and amazing scenery. There are also boat trips available if you’re interested. The little alleys around the village are really cute to explore. Parking is limited, so plan ahead, but overall it’s a delightful place to visit.

Only a short visit while on a tour. Very nice village with history and a good place to sample the local drink Poncho. Next time I would get local bus and stay longer.

Chamber of the Wolves,” referring to the monk seals (lobos-marinhos) that once lived there.
🐟 Traditional fishing village with colorful boats (xavelhas) resting in the small bay.
🎨 Loved by Winston Churchill, who painted it during his stay in Madeira in the 1950s.
🍹 Home of Poncha, Madeira’s iconic sugarcane rum drink, made with honey and lemon.
🌅 Beautiful views of Cabo Girão towering above the sea.Authentic Madeiran atmosphere — narrow streets, locals chatting by the sea, and fresh grilled fish everywhere.
