We did not take the tour option to go in a boat and explore from the inside. It was cold and quite windy so we parked in a lot and walked in. Seeing it from above was magnificent. There is a wodden fence/ barricade telling you not to go past as you could fall, but what you can see is absolutely worth it. Off the to other side and high cliffs with the most beautiful waters. There are quite a few trails to walk, and if in peak season I would recommend the boat/ kayak tour. Would be beautiful to see inside from the water.

After watching countless YouTube videos raving about Portimão’s stunning sea caves, we finally decided to experience them firsthand—and let me tell you, they did not disappoint. The views were absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, just as we’d hoped. We had a blast! The weather was a bit hot, but the scenery made every sun-drenched moment worth it.

Our boat tour with Algarve Discovery was already set to be beautiful, but the crew made it exceptional. Huge shoutout to Andres and Timothy, who were both incredibly accommodating, friendly, and informative throughout the trip. They even paused the tour for a swim break. And wouldn’t you know it, my adventurous husband was the only one brave enough to dive into the 70°F water! He lasted ten minutes before emerging shivering but exhilarated, calling it “invigorating.” It was a hilarious and memorable moment that made the tour even more special.

If you’re visiting Benagil Caves in the Algarve region this is absolutely a tour worth taking. The crew’s professionalism and warmth truly elevate the experience.

Pro Tips for Future Visitors: Stay hydrated! Summer heat can be intense. Bring a hat and use sunblock—shade is limited.
Arrive early or visit during off-peak hours to avoid the crowds and truly soak in the beauty.

This experience absolutely earns a spot on your lifetime travel list. Whether you’re chasing views, adventure, or just a peaceful escape, Portimão’s caves deliver.

Benagil Cave /!\ read before you go /!\
Swimming to Benagil Cave is strictly prohibited because of the constant traffic of boats and kayaks going in and out of the cave. It is unsafe and monitored, so don’t plan to access it by swimming.
To visit the cave, your only options are kayak rental or a small boat tour, both available directly at Benagil Beach, just a few meters away. Prices are around 20€ per person for approximately 30 minutes. And 35€ per person for 1h round cave tour, Kayaks are usually self-guided, while boat tours are quick and organized.
Parking is a major issue. By 10:00 AM, all nearby parking spots were already full. Expect congestion, especially in high season. There is a paid parking lot for 5€ per day, but it is located on top of the hill, about a 10-minute walk downhill to the beach (and uphill on the way back, which can be tiring in the heat).
The beach itself is small and gets very crowded, especially late morning and midday. Arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon is highly recommended. Bring water, sun protection, and be prepared for waiting times for kayaks or boats.
Despite the logistics, the cave is beautiful, but planning ahead is essential to avoid frustration.

Stunning views. I highly recommend a day hiking trip on the cliffs. The sceneries are beautiful. We went in winter season and there was not many people. Easy to park and enjoy the place mostly for ourselves. They do also boat tours that take you inside the caves. I wish we could get there on a stormy day to see big water splashes through the wells.

The Benagil Cave experience was truly unbelievable, with incredibly beautiful views. The combination of the sea, surrounding nature, and soft golden sand creates a unique and unforgettable experience.

Even though December is not the peak season, I truly believe it is still well worth visiting. It’s peaceful, relaxing, and perfect for enjoying fresh air and natural beauty without the crowds.
