THIS was my favorite sightseeing location in Terceira. Because I love historic spots, especially old forts. Apparently this is the largest in the Azores. It’s free to visit and you could take hours walking around the park here. There are long walking paths, picnic areas and various seating. You can’t beat the view from the top.
A general note about Terceira: it’s LGBTQ friendly! You’ll find gender neutral restrooms in many places. (Marked WC for wash closet). Some places are marked at the door with a pride flag so you know it’s particularly welcoming or gay-owned, though I doubt you need to look for that to feel safe here. All of it is welcoming to anyone who’s friendly and respectful.

Great mountain for a hike up, cycle or drive up. The views are great. Do t forget to take corn for the birds and carrots for deer.

Leve snacks!

Children friendly introduction:
This giant stone fortress was built by the Spanish in the 1500s to protect the island from pirates and enemies. It’s the biggest fortress in the Azores—and it worked! No one ever managed to break in.
It’s shaped like a star with thick walls and tunnels inside. Soldiers used to live here with cannons, animals, and even a small church! Later, it was also used as a prison.
Fun fact: During a long battle for freedom (the Liberal Wars), local fighters trapped the enemy soldiers inside the castle for over a year!

Very nice half-day hike - partially accessible by car
We walked from the hotel to Monte Brazil early in the morning. A well-developed path leads from the Fanal bathing area (there is also a parking lot if the hotel is not nearby) along the well-developed path towards the fortress. You pass a dog park and then walk along the fortress walls to the gate.…

Wow what a view
We are hikers and the trip to the top, was top! The reward at the top of this mountain was more than worth the hike. If you and the neighborhood, our advice take this walk and leave your car there😉

Must do activity
This is an excellent way to spend a morning. We hiked from the city and found all kinds of surprises along the way. Make sure to see the bird and deer sanctuaries at the top. The views are amazing, the flowers beautiful, and the roosters talkative! We highly recommend this hike.

3 hour hike.
One day we drove up to check it out and the next day we hiked it. 3 hours and almost 6 miles. I would say moderate however the hike is fabulous; see the landmarks. The deer the birds and the peacocks are all in their holding areas. Enjoy.

The volcano of Angra
Impossible not to see the Monte Brasil from Angra. Access seems somewhat confusing, but you even do well by car. Excellent view over the city. The volcano that is inside it, passes something unnoticed when the mountain climb. On top we have chickens, cannons and statues, between viewpoints and tren…
