We took a little day trip from Lagos to visit the town of Sagres and the lighthouse. The lighthouse was incredibly beautiful, overlooking the vast Atlantic Ocean. We parked along the side of the road, there were a few merchants and food / drink vendors. Inside the fortress there were public restrooms. It was pretty busy the day we were there in June, lots of tourists. Again, beautiful and would recommend.

Entrance costed €10. The exhibition part was closed unfortunately. We manages to capture both, sunny weather and stormy. Views are amazing. There were not many people despite it being the weekend. I guess due to low season.

The lighthouse in Sagres is one of those places that stays with you not because of its architecture alone, but because of the feeling it creates the moment you arrive. It stands at the edge of the cliffs where the land falls sharply into the Atlantic, and even before you see the tower itself, you feel the shift in the air — the wind gets stronger, the light becomes harsher, and the horizon stretches out in a way that makes everything else seem small. When you finally reach the lighthouse, it doesn’t try to impress with height or ornament. It has the quiet confidence of a structure that has watched centuries of storms, sunsets, and passing ships without ever needing to raise its voice.
Its history reaches back to the 16th century, when monks tended a simple beacon here to guide sailors around one of Europe’s most treacherous coastlines. The modern lighthouse came later, but the sense of continuity is still present. Standing near its base, looking down at the cliffs and the endless ocean, it’s easy to understand why this place was once considered the edge of the known world. There’s a rawness to the landscape that makes the lighthouse feel less like a building and more like a companion to the sea.
Even though the tower itself isn’t tall, the cliffs give it a natural monumentality. Its light reaches far into the Atlantic, still serving as a crucial point of orientation for ships navigating the Portuguese coast. If you visit at sunset, the experience becomes almost cinematic — the sky shifts through layers of orange and red, the waves crash against the rocks below, and the lighthouse stands steady in the middle of it all, as if anchoring the scene.
Overall, it’s a place defined by atmosphere rather than spectacle. The combination of wind, light, open space, and silence creates a moment that feels both grounding and overwhelming. The Sagres lighthouse isn’t just a landmark; it’s a reminder of how powerful a landscape can be when you’re standing at the edge of a continent.

The rice dish with fish was good, but otherwise the octopus appetizer had too much cilantro, the calamari were good, but nothing special. The portions are normal, the table setting with water already provided (3.20 euros per 50 cl bottle) is too spartan with paper placemats and napkins. I would not…

Took 10 minutes to clear a table to be seated. Another 10 for our order to be taken. Unfortunately we then waited for 50 minutes and our food still hadn't showed up. There were 3 other tables who had ordered before us who still hadn't received their food. Our server said they were very busy. As if …

We went on a Monday evening when many other places were closed. The restaurant was full by 7pm and there was a nice buzz about the place but there were not enough staff serving for the number of tables. We waited almost 15 minutes to get a drink. The food service was relatively quick compared to th…

It was our silver wedding night at this restaurant. The service seemed stressed. There was wine only as a glass or whole bottle - very expensive. Since we finally had our food on the table, my glass of Vinho Verde was missing. I let them know and got a rather mediocre white wine that was too warm. …

Miserable Service and Far Too Expensive for Food and Service.
It took almost an hour to get our entrances. Now all the tables next door and who ordered after have already received their starters or even their dish... We had to call our (incompetent) waitress to react, as no professional reaction f…
